Convening Five Prework

Learning Outcomes

In this prework activity, similar to what you did for January, you will be preparing to share about your learning cycle #2 with your pilot colleagues.

We’ve included the data storytelling slides for review and then you will create your own slide. Next, you will be preparing for our learning on the role of assessment in personalized, competency-based learning  environments by reading a guiding article and watching a John Hattie video.

Part One

Repeat January's Prework Activity

Step 1:  Look through examples of storytelling slides. This will help to give you an idea of what your evidence slide could look like!

Step 2:  Revisit the Learning Cycle and Levels of Data. These are all slides you have seen before but refreshing your memory will be useful during the next step.

Step 3: Think about the questions in the Reflection section of the learning cycle and then begin to think about the questions in the Share section.

Step 4: Inside of your district's slidedeck you will find a blank slide to make a copy of for each school. Make sure to put your school and district name on the slide along with an explanation of the photos and artifacts in the note section. On this slide please provide photos of actions, artifacts, events, examples, etc. that will tell your team's Learning Cycle #1 story for your chosen learning focus.

Remember, practice is not always perfect; include celebrations, challenges, and maybe even barriers in alignment with your learnings.

Note: At the bottom of the slidedeck, there are a few slide templates you are welcome to choose from instead of using the blank slide. Just make sure you remember to put your school and district name on the slide and put your explanation in the notes!

Part Two

Prepare to collaboratively explore the role of assessment

Step 1:  Get ready with the optional thought catcher or your own way for capturing your thoughts

Step 2:  Read/review Developing “Assessment Capable” Learners by John Hattie, Douglas Fisher, and Nancy Frey.

Guiding Question: What practices and strategies foster assessment capability in students?

Step 3:  While watching this video clip of John Hattie describing assessment-capable learners, capture any new or reinforced learning.

Step 4:  Come prepared to collaboratively discuss.

We look forward to seeing you and hearing your stories on4/10/2025!
